Former UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor is one of the biggest superstars of the MMA realm. Due to his stardom and incredible feats in the UFC, he is often subject to comparison with other outstanding athletes. In a similar turn of events, Conor McGregor was once compared with Michael Jordan, but for a surprising reason. Both Jordan and McGregor have lifted their sport beyond expectations. However, it was their abrupt retirement that drew the comparison by none other than coach Kavanagh on Twitter.

While Conor McGregor became the first UFC double division champion, he is mostly known for his ability to promote the fight and trash-talk. Despite a recent downturn in his performance, the fans are always excited to watch ‘The Notorious’ fight inside the octagon.

Similarly, Michael Jordan made a name for himself as a young prospect in the Chicago Bulls. However, he catapulted into stardom by winning six NBA titles throughout his career.

Similar to the Irishman, Jordan also had a knack for getting inside his opponent’s head. However, that wasn’t the base for the comparison made by coach Kavanagh.

In a surprising twist of events in 2020, the UFC’s most prominent superstar announced his retirement from MMA. This shook the entire MMA community, as McGregor still had the fight left in him.

However, his longtime coach and friend John Kavanagh came to his support and made a Tweet comparing the Irishman with the basketball legend. He wrote:

At age 31 Jordan abruptly retired from basketball before the 1993–94 NBA season, he returned to the Bulls in March 1995 and led them to three additional championships in 1996, 1997, and 1998, as well as a then-record 72 regular-season wins in the 1995–96 NBA season.

Despite the comparison and similarities between the two great athletes, the Irishman wants to better the NBA legend. However, it isn’t regarding the accolades or becoming the best athlete in the world.

Conor McGregor aims to dethrone Michael Jordan

It isn’t surprising to learn that Conor McGregor is one of the top 33 richest athletes in the world. However, he isn’t content with the achievement. The Irishman is determined to surpass the current leader, Michael Jordan, who sits at the pinnacle of the list.

As per a report from The SportsRush, ‘The Notorious’ via his Instagram story claimed that he plans to dethrone Jordan as soon as possible. Seemingly, the Irishman is doing quite well in his business ventures. However, he is still inactive inside the octagon since his horrific leg break injury against Dustin Poirier.

It remains to be seen whether ‘Mystic Mac’ will manifest another dream into reality. Regardless of whether he attains the title of the wealthiest athlete, his fans will always root for him.
